Vaccination Clinic in Point Cook

Vaccines help reduce the spread of disease and trigger your immune system to fight against disease-causing organisms. Take responsibility and strengthen the health of your community by keeping your family’s vaccines up to date at our vaccination clinic in Point Cook, especially before you travel.

Courses, boosters and yearly vaccines

Some vaccines give long-lasting protection after a course of doses, while others need repeating. The flu vaccine is given every year because the virus changes, and protection from some other vaccines fades over time, which is why staying up to date matters at every age, not only in childhood.

Babies and children

Childhood vaccines on the National Immunisation Program schedule are given at set ages, starting at birth and continuing through the early years, with more offered at school. Staying on schedule protects children when they are most vulnerable to diseases such as whooping cough and measles. In Victoria, children need to be fully vaccinated for their age, on a catch-up schedule or medically exempt to enrol in kindergarten or childcare, and some family payments have similar requirements.

The National Immunisation Program

Free vaccines are provided under the National Immunisation Program to eligible groups, including babies and children, adolescents through school programs, pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, older Australians and people with certain medical conditions. Vaccines outside the program carry a cost, so ask the clinic which vaccines are free for you.

Checking what you have had

The Australian Immunisation Register keeps a record of vaccines given in Australia. You can view your own record, or your child’s, through your Medicare online account or the Express Plus Medicare app, and download an immunisation history statement if an employer, school or childcare service asks for one.

On the day

Before the vaccine is given, you will be asked about your health, allergies and any previous reactions. Mild effects such as a sore arm, tiredness or a low fever are common and settle within a day or two. Staying nearby for at least 15 minutes afterwards is recommended, so any rare reaction can be managed quickly.

If a reaction occurs

A cool compress can ease a sore arm, and paracetamol can help with fever or discomfort. Seek medical advice if a reaction worries you or has not settled within a couple of days, and call 000 for difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or throat.

Common questions

Are vaccines safe?

Vaccines used in Australia are assessed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration before approval, and their safety continues to be monitored once they are in use. Serious reactions are rare.

Can more than one vaccine be given at once?

Many vaccines can be given at the same visit. The doctor will confirm what is appropriate.

Should I still come if I have a cold?

A mild illness without a fever does not usually stop vaccination. If you have a fever or feel quite unwell, call the clinic first, as it may be better to wait.

Do adults need boosters?

Some do. A tetanus booster may be recommended after certain wounds, for example, and some work and travel vaccines need topping up. Bringing your immunisation history makes gaps easier to spot.

I am travelling soon. Where do I start?

The Travel Medicine page explains what a travel health appointment covers.

Can I be vaccinated during pregnancy?

Some vaccines are recommended during pregnancy, while live vaccines are not given. The Antenatal Health page covers vaccines in pregnancy.
