Period Problems and PCOS in Point Cook

Periods that are very heavy, very painful, irregular or missing for months are common reasons to see a GP. So are acne, extra facial hair and trouble falling pregnant, which together can point to PCOS. Whether you need a PCOS doctor in Point Cook or advice about a difficult cycle, a GP can find the cause, arrange tests and manage most of the care close to home.

PCOS has been renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS). As healthdirect explains, the condition, its diagnosis and its treatment have not changed, so you may see both names for a while.

When a period counts as heavy

About 1 in 4 women have heavy periods. Your bleeding may be heavy if you:

  • need a new pad or tampon every 1 to 2 hours
  • pass clots bigger than a 50 cent coin
  • bleed through clothing, or need a towel on the bed at night
  • bleed for more than 8 days

Causes range from hormone changes and thyroid problems to fibroids, polyps and bleeding disorders, so the aim is to find the reason rather than only slow the flow. Ongoing heavy loss can drain iron stores; if tablets are not enough, an iron infusion may be discussed.

Signs that may point to PCOS

According to Jean Hailes, the condition affects about 1 in 8 women. It looks different from person to person, and may include:

  • irregular periods, or none for months at a time
  • thicker, darker hair on the face, chest, stomach or back
  • thinning hair on the scalp
  • acne, or dark velvety patches of skin
  • weight that is hard to manage
  • anxiety, low mood or difficulty getting pregnant

How PCOS is diagnosed

A diagnosis needs two of these three features:

  • irregular or absent periods
  • signs of high androgen hormones, seen on the skin or in a blood test
  • many immature follicles on an ultrasound, or a high anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) level in a blood test

Your GP will also rule out conditions that look similar, such as thyroid disease. Blood tests can be collected at our onsite pathology centre. Ultrasound is not usually recommended for people under 20, so diagnosis in teenagers can take longer.

PCOS care in Point Cook after diagnosis

Treatment is built around the symptoms that matter most to you. It may involve healthy eating and activity changes, the contraceptive pill, anti-androgen medicines, insulin-sensitising medicines, or help with ovulation if you are planning a pregnancy. Because the condition raises the long-term risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease, regular checks of blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure are part of good care. Your GP can refer you to a dietitian, gynaecologist or endocrinologist when needed.

Dr Nasibeh Hasanijabali lists PCOS and menstrual disorders among her interests.

Common questions

Can I get pregnant if I have PCOS?

Many women with PCOS do conceive, although it can take longer and sometimes needs help with ovulation. If a baby is on your mind, a preconception check is a good next step.

Can teenagers be checked?

Yes. Periods can take a few years to settle, so a doctor may monitor a teenager with possible PCOS for some years before confirming it.

Does PCOS go away after menopause?

It is a lifelong condition, although symptoms often change over time, including around menopause. Regular check-ups continue to matter.

When is period bleeding an emergency?

If you are bleeding very heavily and feel faint, dizzy or short of breath, go to a hospital emergency department or call 000.
