Minor surgery at our Point Cook clinic

Whether a particular problem can be treated at the clinic, or needs a referral elsewhere, is decided at your consultation.

Information to share beforehand

  • blood-thinning medicines
  • allergies to anaesthetic, dressings or antiseptics
  • diabetes, bleeding disorders or problems with wound healing
  • pregnancy or possible pregnancy

During the procedure

The area is cleaned, local anaesthetic is injected, and the procedure starts once the area is numb. Pressure or movement may still be felt, but sharp pain should not be, so speak up if it is. A dressing is applied at the end, along with care instructions.

Ingrown toenails

An ingrown toenail develops when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness and sometimes infection. Mild cases can improve with warm soaks and well-fitting shoes, while recurring or infected nails may need part of the nail removed under local anaesthetic.

Keloid scars

Keloids are raised, firm scars that grow beyond the edges of the original wound. Injections into the scar are one treatment used to flatten and soften them, often over more than one visit, which is why the Patient Info and Fees schedule lists first and subsequent keloid injections separately.

Minor cuts and burns

Minor cuts, grazes and small burns can often be cleaned and dressed in general practice. A tetanus booster may be needed if it has been a while since your last dose.

Looking after the wound

  • leave the dressing in place for as long as instructed
  • use simple pain relief if needed, as directed
  • return for a wound check or suture removal when booked
  • seek advice if pain worsens, the wound opens, or redness spreads

Stitches

Stitches generally come out after about 5 to 14 days, depending on the part of the body. Areas with a good blood supply, such as the face, heal faster than the back or legs.

Emergencies

For heavy bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure, a deep wound or a suspected broken bone, call 000 or attend an emergency department.

Common questions

Do I need to fast beforehand?

Procedures under local anaesthetic generally do not require fasting. You will be told if a specific procedure needs preparation.

Can I drive afterwards?

Ask at your consultation. The answer depends on the procedure and where on the body it is done.

What should I do if a wound starts to bleed at home?

Press firmly on the dressing with a clean cloth for 10 to 15 minutes without lifting it. If bleeding continues, seek urgent care.

Will it leave a scar?

Any procedure that cuts the skin can leave a mark. Good wound care and sun protection help a scar settle.

Is local anaesthetic safe?

It is widely used and serious reactions are uncommon. Mention any previous reaction before your procedure.

Can I shower afterwards?

Follow the dressing advice you were given. A waterproof dressing may allow showering, but avoid baths and swimming until the wound has healed.

Why do ingrown toenails come back?

Cutting nails too short or rounding the corners, tight shoes and the natural shape of the nail can all contribute. Cutting toenails straight across and wearing well-fitting footwear helps prevent a recurrence.

Will I need time off work?

That depends on what was done and the kind of work you do, so raise it before the procedure to plan ahead.

Can I bring someone with me for a procedure?

Ask when you book. Having someone drive you home can be helpful after some procedures.
