PRP Hair Treatment: Cost and What to Expect

Many people want to know the PRP cost in Point Cook before anything else. The honest answer is that the price is confirmed at your consultation, once a GP has assessed your hair loss and whether PRP suits you. Reception can advise on fees when you call (03) 7300 7780.

PRP is generally not covered by Medicare, so you pay the full cost of the procedure. You will know what that is before any treatment is arranged.

Why there is no single price

PRP is usually a course of treatment rather than a one-off, so the total depends on your situation. Things that affect it include:

  • the number of sessions suggested, which varies from person to person
  • whether blood tests or other checks are needed first
  • whether PRP is combined with other treatments, such as prescribed medicines
  • review appointments to see how your hair is responding

Understanding the cost of PRP in Point Cook

Two separate parts are involved. The first is the GP consultation where PRP is discussed. Standard consultations are bulk billed with a valid Medicare card, and the standard consultation fee without Medicare is $70. If your consultation attracts a fee, reception will tell you when you book.

The second is the procedure. All procedures at the clinic attract fees, and PRP is not listed on the published fees table, so the GP or reception will give you the figure. If you have private health insurance, check with your fund about cover.

What happens at the consultation

The GP will:

  • take a medical history and ask how your hair loss has progressed
  • look for causes that need their own treatment
  • explain what the procedure involves, and its possible risks and side effects
  • discuss whether PRP suits you and what the alternatives are
  • answer your questions

There is no obligation to proceed after your consultation.

What to expect on the day

Blood is drawn from your arm, as for a standard blood test. The sample is processed to concentrate the platelets, and a doctor administers the platelet-rich plasma to the thinning areas of the scalp. The procedure is carried out at the clinic. Mild tenderness or redness of the scalp can follow.

Weighing up value

Before paying for a course, compare PRP with the other options. Medicines such as minoxidil are an established treatment for pattern hair loss, while research into PRP is still developing: a 2021 systematic review in women called for larger randomised trials to confirm its benefit. Results vary and cannot be predicted, so treat PRP as one option to weigh up rather than a guaranteed result.

Men can read about other approaches on the men’s hair loss page, and women on the female hair loss page.

Questions worth asking

  • How many sessions would you suggest for me, and over what period?
  • What is the fee for each session, and the total?
  • What other options suit my type of hair loss?
  • How will we judge whether it is working?
  • What side effects should I watch for?

Common questions

Should I bring details of past treatments?

Yes. Bring the names and dates of any hair loss treatments you have tried, so the GP can see what has already been used before suggesting anything new.

Can I get a quote over the phone?

Reception can advise on fees, but the treatment plan, and with it the total, is confirmed once the GP has assessed you.

When do I pay?

Payment is required on the day of the appointment. The clinic does not keep cash on the premises, so pay by EFTPOS. Practice Information has the billing details.

Is PRP used for anything other than hair?

Yes. The PRP clinic page covers other uses.
