45-49 Health Check in Point Cook
Your late forties are a sensible time to take stock. The 45-49 health check in Point Cook is a one-off Medicare health assessment for adults in this age group who have at least one risk factor for a long-term condition such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease or arthritis.
It is a longer, planned visit with a GP that looks at where your health is heading, not just at the problem that brought you in.
Who can have a 45-49 health check in Point Cook
Under the Medicare rules for this assessment, you need to be aged 45 to 49 (inclusive) and, in the GP’s clinical judgement, at risk of developing a chronic disease because of a specific risk factor. Risk factors the doctor may consider include:
- lifestyle factors such as smoking, physical inactivity, poor nutrition or alcohol misuse
- biomedical factors such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, raised blood glucose or excess weight
- a family history of a chronic disease
Medicare funds this assessment once per person, so it is worth planning rather than squeezing into a short appointment.
Why this age group
Conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease tend to build quietly for years before they cause symptoms. The late forties are often the point where a risk factor, such as a few extra kilos, a parent with diabetes or a cholesterol result that has crept up, is worth acting on while the changes are still yours to choose. The assessment is a chance to look at the whole picture in one sitting rather than piece by piece.
What the GP looks at
The assessment combines a detailed history, a physical examination and any tests that are needed. Depending on your risk factors, the doctor may:
- measure blood pressure, weight and waist
- arrange blood tests for cholesterol and blood glucose, which can be collected at the onsite pathology centre
- talk through diet, activity, alcohol, smoking, sleep and stress
- check which screening tests you are due for
Screening that starts in your forties
From 45, you can do a free home bowel screening test every two years through the national bowel screening scheme. People aged 45 to 49 request their first kit themselves, or the doctor can help you arrange one. Your GP may also discuss whether a Heart Health Check suits you, which estimates your chance of a heart attack or stroke over the next five years.
How to prepare
A little preparation makes the visit more useful:
- ask relatives about heart disease, diabetes, stroke or cancer in the family
- bring a list of your medicines, vitamins and supplements
- bring recent results from other providers
- note any symptoms you have been putting off mentioning
When you call, tell reception it is for a 45-49 health assessment so enough time is set aside.
After your assessment
The GP explains what was found and you agree on next steps together. That might be a lifestyle change you can realistically keep up, further tests, a referral, or a review date. If the assessment uncovers an ongoing condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes, care continues through chronic disease management.
Common questions
Is there a cost?
Ask reception how health assessments are billed when you book. Standard consultations are bulk billed with a valid Medicare card, and the fees page lists procedure costs.
What if I have no risk factors?
This Medicare item is only for people with at least one risk factor. A general check-up is still available, and the doctor can advise what screening suits your age.
Do I need to fast for blood tests?
Not always. The doctor will tell you whether any test needs fasting when the request form is written.
Can I also have a Heart Health Check?
Yes, but not within 12 months of this assessment, because Medicare does not fund a heart check in the year after another health assessment. The GP can help you decide which to do first.
Can I have the assessment at 50?
No. This item covers ages 45 to 49 only, so book before your 50th birthday if you want to use it.
