Full skin checks

Point Cook Doctors offers full skin checks with photography. Photographs create a record that makes it easier to compare spots over time and notice change. The Skin Check page has more information.

Types of skin cancer

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type and usually grows slowly. Squamous cell carcinoma can grow more quickly and may appear as a scaly or crusted lump. Melanoma is less common but more dangerous, because it can spread if it is not found early.

Know the warning signs

Between checks, get to know your own skin. The ABCDE guide describes changes in a mole that should be looked at:

  • Asymmetry: one half looks different from the other
  • Border: the edges are irregular, blurred or jagged
  • Colour: uneven colour or several shades
  • Diameter: larger than about 6 millimetres, or growing
  • Evolving: changing in size, shape, colour or height

Also watch for a new spot, a sore that does not heal, or a spot that itches or bleeds.

Minor procedures and treatments in Point Cook

  • assessment of moles, spots and lesions
  • skin biopsy, taking a small sample for laboratory testing
  • keloid scar injections
  • treatment of common skin conditions

Common skin conditions

Many everyday skin problems are managed in general practice, including eczema, psoriasis, acne, fungal infections, warts and skin infections. The right treatment depends on the diagnosis, so the skin is examined before any cream or medicine is chosen.

Biopsies explained

A biopsy removes a small piece of skin, or sometimes a whole spot, so it can be examined under a microscope. Common types include a punch biopsy, a shave biopsy and an excision, and some need a few stitches.

Caring for the area afterwards

Keep any dressing clean and dry for as long as advised, and protect healing skin from the sun, since new scars can darken with UV exposure. Contact the clinic if the area becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or painful.

Sun protection

Slip on protective clothing, slop on SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, slap on a broad-brimmed hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses, especially when the UV index is 3 or above.

Protecting children’s skin

Sunburn in childhood increases the risk of skin cancer later in life, so sun protection habits are worth building early.

Common questions

Is there a recommended interval between skin checks?

That depends on your personal risk, including skin type, number of moles, history of sunburn and any personal or family history of skin cancer. The doctor can suggest how often to return.

Does a biopsy hurt?

Local anaesthetic numbs the area, so most people feel only a brief sting from the injection itself.

What should I wear to a skin check?

Choose clothing that is easy to remove, and skip nail polish or make-up if you want those areas checked.

How do I find out a biopsy result?

Ask at the appointment how the result will be followed up. Booking a review appointment is a reliable way to make sure it is discussed.

Do all moles need removing?

No. Most moles are harmless. A spot is generally only removed or sampled when it looks unusual, has changed, or is causing problems.

Can keloid scars be treated?

Keloid injections are one option, and the Small Scale Surgeries page explains keloids in more detail.

Does sun protection cause low vitamin D?

For most people, normal sun protection does not cause vitamin D deficiency, because short, incidental sun exposure is usually enough. A doctor can advise if you are at higher risk.

Do I need a referral for a skin check?

No. You can book a skin check directly with a GP.
