What pathology testing does

Pathology tests examine samples such as blood, urine and swabs to help diagnose illness, monitor ongoing conditions and screen for problems before symptoms appear. The results give information that an examination alone cannot.

Tests a doctor might request

  • full blood count
  • iron studies
  • cholesterol and blood glucose
  • kidney and liver function
  • thyroid function
  • vitamin D and vitamin B12
  • urine tests
  • STI tests
  • pregnancy tests

Preparing for a blood test in Point Cook

Most tests need no preparation. Some cholesterol and glucose tests require fasting, and the doctor who orders the test will tell you if this applies and for how long. Water is generally fine while fasting.

  • bring your request form
  • drink water beforehand unless told otherwise, as it can make collection easier
  • wear sleeves that roll up easily
  • mention any blood-thinning medicines to the collector

Collecting a urine sample

For a midstream urine sample, wash your hands, start passing urine into the toilet, then catch the middle part of the stream in the sterile container without touching the inside. Finish in the toilet, close the lid firmly and label the container as instructed.

Swabs and other samples

Not every test uses blood. Swabs from the throat, nose, skin, wounds or genital area look for infection, and some tests, such as certain STI checks, can be done with a swab you collect yourself. Stool samples are used to investigate bowel symptoms and for bowel cancer screening.

Children and blood tests

Children often cope best when told simply and honestly what will happen. A favourite toy, a distraction such as a video, and a parent staying close can all help. Ask whether a numbing cream is suitable and how long before the test it needs to go on.

Understanding your results

Results go to the doctor who requested the test. A number outside the reference range is not always a problem, and a result inside it does not rule everything out, so results are best discussed alongside your symptoms and history. Some conditions need repeat testing over time to see whether results are stable or changing.

Why tests are repeated

For ongoing conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease or thyroid problems, regular tests show how well treatment is working and whether a medicine dose needs adjusting. A one-off abnormal result may also be repeated to confirm it before any decision is made.

Common questions

Are pathology tests bulk billed?

Many tests requested by a GP attract a Medicare rebate, but some do not. If cost is a concern, ask when the test is requested.

What if I feel faint with needles?

Tell the collector before they start. Lying down, looking away and slow breathing can all help.

Should I take my usual medicines?

In most cases, yes. A few tests are affected by certain medicines, so check with the requesting doctor if you are unsure.

How will I hear about my results?

Ask how results will be followed up at the time the test is ordered.

Why is more than one tube of blood collected?

Different tests need different tubes, some containing preservatives or other additives, so several small tubes may be filled at once.

What if the collection site bruises?

Pressing firmly on the site for a few minutes afterwards reduces bruising. Minor bruising fades within days, but seek advice for swelling, increasing pain or numbness in the arm.

Can I see my results myself?

Ask your doctor. Many results can also be viewed through My Health Record once they have been uploaded.

Do I need to bring my Medicare card?

Yes. Bring your Medicare card, along with your pathology request form.
