Truck Licence and Commercial Driver Medicals in Point Cook
Truck, bus, taxi and rideshare drivers are held to higher medical standards than private drivers. A truck licence medical in Point Cook assesses you against the commercial standards in the national Assessing Fitness to Drive guidelines, and the GP completes the form your licensing authority, employer or operator has asked for.
Driver’s licence and taxi medicals carry a total fee of $140 on the clinic’s fees table, with no Medicare rebate.
Who is assessed against commercial standards
Transport Victoria applies the commercial standards to people who hold or are applying for a medium rigid (MR), heavy rigid (HR), heavy combination (HC) or multi-combination (MC) licence, and to drivers carrying public passengers or dangerous goods. Its information on medical reviews sets this out. The standards are stricter because a crash in a heavy or passenger vehicle carries greater risk.
When you need a truck licence medical in Point Cook
Common reasons include:
- Transport Victoria has asked for a medical report, for example after you reported a condition
- an employer or transport operator requires proof that you are fit to drive a commercial vehicle
- your operator runs Basic or Advanced Fatigue Management, where the NHVR requires drivers to be assessed against the Austroads guidelines
- Safe Transport Victoria has asked for a treating doctor’s report for your taxi or rideshare accreditation
Your duty to report a condition
If you have or develop a long-term or permanent condition, injury or disability that may affect safe driving, Victorian law requires you to tell Transport Victoria’s Medical Review team as soon as practicable. The VicRoads medical report can then be completed by your doctor, online or on a paper form.
What the assessment covers
The medical report form follows the Austroads guidelines. Its sections include:
- vision, which is always assessed
- blackouts, seizures and epilepsy
- heart conditions
- diabetes
- hearing, which applies to commercial drivers only
- sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea
- musculoskeletal conditions
- mental health, memory and thinking, medicines and substance use
The GP finishes with a recommendation about your fitness to drive. The licensing decision itself rests with the authority. Having a medical condition does not automatically mean you cannot drive commercially.
Taxi and rideshare drivers
Safe Transport Victoria now uses a medical self-assessment for commercial passenger vehicle driver accreditation, completed every three years, or every year if certain conditions are present. You do not need to see a doctor for the self-assessment itself. If it flags a condition, you may be asked for a report from a treating doctor or specialist, which the GP can prepare.
What to bring
- the form or letter from Transport Victoria, your employer or operator
- your driver licence and photo ID
- glasses, contact lenses or hearing aids
- a list of your medicines
- specialist letters, such as sleep study, heart or eye reports
- recent blood glucose records if you have diabetes
If blood tests are needed, pathology can be collected onsite. For a general work medical, see pre-employment medicals.
Common questions
Is a commercial driver medical bulk billed?
No. It has no Medicare rebate. Check whether your employer covers the cost. Patient Info and Fees has the current figure.
Who receives the completed report?
It goes to whoever requested it, as set out on the form. The GP will explain what is being sent before it goes.
I have sleep apnoea. Can I still drive a truck?
Bring your latest sleep study and treatment details. The standards look at how the condition is treated and controlled, and the final decision rests with the licensing authority.
Can I walk in for a driver medical?
Walk-ins are welcome. A walk-in visit may attract a private fee, so ask reception. Booking ahead with your form is usually the better option.
