Point Cook Doctors | Early Intervention

Why the early years matter

A child’s brain develops rapidly in the first years of life, and skills such as communication, movement and social connection build on one another. Support that starts early helps a child make the most of this period, and it gives families strategies they can use at home.

Signs worth discussing

  • not babbling, pointing or using words at the expected ages
  • speech that family members find hard to understand
  • late sitting, crawling or walking, or unusual clumsiness
  • limited interest in playing or interacting with others
  • strong reactions to sounds, textures or changes in routine
  • ongoing feeding, sleep or toileting difficulties
  • concerns raised by an educator, teacher or Maternal and Child Health nurse
  • losing skills your child previously had

Parents often sense when something is not quite right, and asking for a check is always reasonable.

How a GP supports early intervention in Point Cook

A GP can take a developmental and medical history, examine your child, check growth and arrange hearing or vision tests where needed. From there, the next step might be a referral to a paediatrician, to allied health professionals, or both. The Children’s Health page covers children’s health more broadly.

Preparing for the appointment

  • your child’s green book or health record
  • reports from childcare, kindergarten or school
  • notes on what you have noticed and when it started, with examples
  • short videos of the concern, such as speech or play, if they are easy to take

A team around your child

Early intervention often involves several professionals working together, such as a paediatrician, speech pathologist, physiotherapist or psychologist. Point Cook Doctors has Allied Health services at the clinic, and Speech Pathology supports patients of all ages.

Supporting development at home

Everyday interactions matter. Talking, reading and singing together, following your child’s lead in play, and giving them time to respond all build language and connection. Keeping screen time low for young children leaves more room for these interactions.

The NDIS early childhood approach

Through its early childhood approach, the NDIS supports children younger than 6 with developmental delay, and children younger than 9 with disability, together with their families. A formal diagnosis is not needed for a child younger than 6 to receive early support. Families can contact the NDIS or a local early childhood partner directly.

Maternal and Child Health visits

Victoria’s free Maternal and Child Health service offers Key Ages and Stages visits from birth to school age. These visits run alongside GP care and give another opportunity to track development.

Common questions

Is a referral needed to see a paediatrician?

A referral, usually from a GP, is needed to claim a Medicare rebate for a paediatrician appointment.

What if I was told to wait and see?

If the concern is still there, it is reasonable to ask for a review or a second opinion. An assessment does not commit your child to any treatment.

Did I cause my child’s delay?

Developmental differences arise for many reasons and are very rarely due to anything a parent did. Seeking support is a positive step.

What does developmental delay mean?

It means a child has not reached expected milestones for their age in one or more areas, such as speech, movement, social skills or learning.

Should bilingual families stop using their home language?

No. Using the language you know best with your child supports their development, and learning two languages does not cause language delay.

Can support continue at kindergarten or school?

Yes. Therapists often share strategies with educators, so support can carry across home, kindergarten and school.
