Medical Certificates in Point Cook
When illness or injury keeps you away from work, study or exams, or you need to stay home to look after a family member, a GP can assess you and provide a medical certificate in Point Cook.
A certificate records a doctor’s professional opinion, so it is written after a consultation where the GP has had the chance to understand what is going on.
Types of certificate
- Sick leave: you were, or are, unfit for work because of illness or injury
- Carer’s leave: you needed to care for a family or household member who was unwell
- Study: missed classes, assessments or exams
- Fitness to return: confirming you are well enough to resume work or sport
Certificates for work injuries and pre-employment checks are different documents, covered below.
What employers can ask for
The Fair Work Ombudsman explains that employers can ask for evidence for as little as one day off, and that medical certificates and statutory declarations are both examples of acceptable evidence. An award or registered agreement may set out what evidence is required. If you are unsure what your workplace needs, check before your appointment.
Letting your employer know
Fair Work says you need to tell your employer you are taking sick or carer’s leave as soon as possible, which can be after the leave has started, and say how long you expect to be away. If you could not get a doctor’s appointment, a statutory declaration may be accepted instead. An employee who does not give evidence when asked may not be paid for that leave.
Getting a medical certificate in Point Cook
Book an appointment online or by phone, or come in. Walk-ins are welcome. A walk-in visit may attract a private fee, so ask reception. At the appointment the GP asks about your symptoms, examines you if needed and decides what they can state. Bring:
- the dates you have been, or expect to be, off
- any form your employer, university or school has asked to be completed
- your Medicare card
Standard consultations are bulk billed with a valid Medicare card. Ask reception about fees for forms or reports.
If you were sick before your visit
Tell the doctor honestly when your symptoms started. The GP can only certify what they are able to assess, and will note what you tell them about earlier days. Booking promptly, even by phone consultation where suitable, avoids gaps in your evidence.
Work injuries and WorkCover
If you were hurt at work and are claiming weekly payments in Victoria, you need a certificate of capacity rather than an ordinary certificate. WorkSafe Victoria notes that only a medical practitioner can issue the first certificate, which is valid for up to 14 days unless special reasons apply. The WorkCover GP page explains how that care works. For job applications, see pre-employment medicals.
Common questions
Can I get a certificate for one day off?
Yes, if the doctor assesses that you were unfit for work. Employers are allowed to ask for evidence for a single day.
Will the certificate say what is wrong with me?
It usually states that you were unfit for work and for which dates. Ask the doctor if you have a concern about what is included.
Is a certificate needed for a planned procedure?
Fair Work says pre-arranged appointments and elective surgery are only covered by sick leave if you are unfit for work, and your employer can ask for evidence of that.
Do universities accept GP certificates?
Most do, but each has its own rules and forms for special consideration. Check yours and bring any form along.
Can I get one for caring for my child?
Yes. Carer’s certificates are a common request. Let reception know who was unwell when you book.
