Mental Health Care Plans in Point Cook
Getting a mental health care plan in Point Cook starts with a GP appointment. Medicare calls it a mental health treatment plan (MHTP): a written plan you prepare with your GP that records your goals and the support recommended, and lets you claim Medicare rebates for sessions with an eligible mental health professional.
The rules changed on 1 November 2025, so this page sets out how they work now.
Who can get a plan
Under the Better Access initiative, the plan is for people with a clinically diagnosed mental disorder who need at least a moderate level of support. Depression and anxiety are the most common examples, but there are many others. You do not need a diagnosis before you book: your GP assesses this with you.
The rules as at October 2026
- Medicare rebates apply to up to 10 individual and up to 10 group sessions each calendar year, from 1 January to 31 December.
- Your first referral covers up to six sessions. You then return to your GP, who decides whether a further course is needed within the yearly limit.
- The plan must be prepared by a GP at the practice where you are registered for MyMedicare, or by your usual GP, at the practice that has given most of your care over the past 12 months or will over the next 12.
- Reviews and new referrals happen in standard GP consultations.
- Sessions can be with a psychologist, an eligible social worker or an eligible occupational therapist. Providers set their own fees.
The Better Access FAQ from the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has the full detail.
What happens when you get a mental health care plan in Point Cook
Your GP asks how you have been feeling, how you are sleeping and eating, how you are managing at work or study, and whether you feel safe. You may fill in a short questionnaire. Your GP will also consider physical health problems that can affect mood.
Together you agree on goals and the type of support you want. You leave with a referral you can take to any eligible provider of that profession, including the clinic’s psychology service. Mention the plan when you book so reception can arrange the right appointment.
Telehealth and phone appointments
The MHTP can be prepared by telehealth if you see your MyMedicare practice or usual GP and have had a face-to-face visit with them in the past 12 months, unless an exemption applies. The clinic also asks for at least one in-person visit a year to stay eligible for phone consultations. Our telehealth page explains how these appointments work.
Support for carers and new parents
Services Australia explains that a carer may join up to two sessions a year as part of the person’s treatment, with their consent; these count towards the 10. If you are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months, your GP can refer you for up to three Medicare-supported counselling sessions.
Other help, and help in a crisis
Medicare Mental Health Centres offer free, confidential support with no appointment, referral or Medicare card needed. If you are in immediate danger, call 000. Lifeline is available on 13 11 14 at any hour. Our mental health page lists more support lines.
Common questions
Is the GP appointment bulk billed?
Standard consultations are bulk billed with a valid Medicare card, and reception can confirm how plan preparation is billed. Psychologists and other providers set their own fees, so ask about any gap.
I have a plan from another clinic. Can I keep using it?
Referrals must come from your MyMedicare practice or usual GP. If Point Cook Doctors is now your regular clinic, your GP here can review what you have and arrange new referrals if needed.
Will my employer find out?
No. Your plan and health information are private, and doctors cannot share them without your agreement.
