Pre-employment and licence medicals

A pre-employment medical costs $140, with no Medicare rebate. The same published fee applies to taxi and driver’s licence medicals; see driver medicals for what a commercial licence assessment involves. Bring:

  • the employer’s or licensing form, if one was given to you
  • photo ID
  • glasses or contact lenses if you wear them
  • a list of your medicines

Requirements differ between jobs, so ask the employer what the medical needs to cover and bring that with you.

WorkCover injuries

If you are hurt at work, tell your employer and bring their contact details to the appointment so the clinic can verify the claim and arrange payment. The first certificate of capacity must come from a medical practitioner, and WorkSafe Victoria says it is valid for a maximum of 14 days unless special reasons exist. The WorkCover GP page explains reviews after that.

Getting back to work

A certificate of capacity describes your injury, what work you can do and any limits on your usual tasks. Before each review, think about which duties are still hard and which you have managed, because that is what the doctor will ask. If an insurer or lawyer needs a written account of your condition, see medical reports.

Sick notes and time off

For a short illness, the GP can provide a medical certificate for your employer. Mention you need one at the start of the visit. If you have been unwell for several days, tell the doctor when it started so the certificate reflects the time you were unfit for work.

Seeing a doctor near Laverton around your shifts

The clinic opens 8am to 8pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm on weekends, with public holidays 10am to 3pm. A normal GP consultation costs nothing with a valid Medicare card, but medicals carry their own fee. When you book online or call (03) 7300 7780, say which medical you need so the right time is set aside. The occupational health page lists other work services.

Common questions

Can my employer pay for my pre-employment medical?

You pay on the day of the appointment. Whether your employer reimburses you is between you and them.

My new job starts next week. Can I get a medical in time?

Book as soon as you have the paperwork and tell reception your deadline, so they can look for the earliest suitable time.

Can a medical be done on a weekend?

The clinic is open on Saturdays and Sundays. Ask reception whether the medical you need can be booked then.

Do I need a referral for a WorkCover appointment?

No. Book with a GP, and bring your employer’s details and any claim number you already have.

How is a WorkCover visit billed?

The clinic asks WorkCover patients for their employer’s details so it can verify the claim and arrange payment. Ask reception how your visit will be charged.

What if my injury is serious?

Call 000 or head straight to hospital for a severe injury, heavy bleeding or a suspected broken bone.
