Some travel vaccines can only be given at approved centres, and the Point Cook clinic is one of them for yellow fever.

Yellow fever vaccination

The clinic is an authorised Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. According to the Australian Immunisation Handbook, only approved centres can give this vaccine, the certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination, and it now lasts for life. You receive the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) at the visit. The vaccine costs $160, with no Medicare rebate. The yellow fever vaccine page has more.

Other travel vaccines and malaria

Healthdirect suggests seeing your doctor 6 to 12 weeks before you leave, so there is time for vaccines that need more than one dose. The GP can advise on travel vaccinations such as hepatitis A and typhoid, and on malaria, which is spread by mosquitoes. Healthdirect advises preventing mosquito bites and using preventive medicines in affected areas.

What to bring to a travel appointment

The doctor will ask about where you are going, for how long, the season and the kind of travel, as well as your age, health and vaccination history. Bring:

  • your itinerary, including stopovers
  • any vaccination records you have
  • a list of your medicines
  • news of a pregnancy, or plans for one

If children are coming, Smartraveller suggests checking that their childhood vaccinations are current.

Saving a second trip

Once you have had your travel consultation in person, a question that comes up afterwards, such as a medicine query, may be handled by phone consultation. The doctor calls on the day you book, at no set time. Anything that needs an examination or an injection still means coming in.

Wyndham Vale doctor visits: hours and fees

The clinic is open from 8am until 8pm through the week, and 9am until 5pm on Saturday and Sunday; public holidays are 10am to 3pm. Travel vaccines carry a cost even though seeing the GP costs nothing with Medicare; check the fees page. To arrange it, book online or ring (03) 7300 7780, mentioning that it is a travel appointment. The travel medicine page covers the full service.

Common questions

I have had the yellow fever vaccine before. Do I need it again?

Since 2016 the certificate has been valid for the life of the vaccinated person. Bring your old certificate so the doctor can check it.

How do I know if my trip needs yellow fever vaccination?

It depends on where you are going. The Handbook also notes that Australia strongly recommends travellers over 1 year of age carry a valid certificate if they enter Australia within 6 days of leaving a country on its yellow fever list. Check Smartraveller and ask the doctor.

My trip is soon. Is it too late?

Book anyway and say when you leave. The GP can tell you what can still be done in the time left, bearing in mind the yellow fever certificate only becomes valid 10 days after the dose.

Can the whole family be seen at once?

Tell reception how many people are travelling so each person has an appointment, and bring everyone’s vaccination history.
